Although described as ‘easy’ these walks are slightly more committing and are amidst the mountains. Before setting out due regard should be taken of the weather forecast, the altitude, the gear you carry and your own abilities. Local paths are well signed in the summer months but a map is still advised.
Argentiere Glacier from LognanA great opportunity to get up high and get close to a glacier without too much effort. Catch the Grand Montets telepherique to Lognan, above Argentiere. A broad track leads gently up towards the glacier. The view is best from the slightly higher Point de Vue. Once you’ve taken in the impressive view over the Argentiere Glacier, treat yourself to a cold beer or an ice cream back at Lognan or the Plan Joran.
If you fancy walking back down to Argentiere take the footpath through the trees behind the Plan Joran restaurant and avoid the Pierre a Ric ski run which is steep and rough under foot.
Then hit the pool at the apartment!
A more rewarding way of getting to the classic viewpoint over the Mer de Glace at Montenvers. Take the Aiguille du Midi telepherique but get out at the halfway station. From here it’s a stunning walk beneath the Chamonix aiguilles on a fairly level, even slightly downhill, gradient to Montenvers.
Once you’ve taken it all in, bought the ice cream /cold beer (delete as appropriate) and taken the trip to the ice cave, you’ve got the option of some more walking all the way down through the forest to Chamonix, or just catch the train!
To get a better and less foreshortened view of the aiguilles, try the opposite side of the valley. Using the Flegere telepherique to get you up and the new Brevent gondola to get you down, there’s a good path linking the 2 ski areas. The view across the valley for the duration is simply stunning.

To make this a good round trip catch the train from Argentiere through to Vallorcine (the last stop before Switzerland) on the other side of the Col de Montets. There’s a new gondola right next to the station which takes you high, and from the top station its not far to the Col des Possettes. The hillside below here is probably the best spot for a view straight down the Chamonix valley.
There’s a couple of Alpages on the hillside which is the winter ski at of Domain de Balme to chose from if you’re feeling peckish. Otherwise, keep on heading down towards Charamillon and Le Tour.
From Le Tour either catch a bus or walk down to Argentiere via Le Planet or the Petit Balcon Nord.
